Multidisciplinary Research Highlights

Biometrics: Smart Environments, Biometric Interpretation, and Liveness Detection
“These simple biometrics could greatly impact our ability to remotely determine vital information, from whether an elderly individual has fallen and needs assistance, to the location of a suspicious individual in an airport.”

Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Intervertebral Discs
“The convergence of these projects will greatly expedite the diagnosis and subsequent access to treatment for millions of patients suffering from cases of IDD (Intervertebral Disc Degeneration).”

Motion Simulation for Advanced Transportation Systems
“In order to use this simulated environment in a proactive and innovative way, a proposal has recently been submitted that would allow for the installation of sensors in the driving cabin. These sensors could track behavior, weight shifts, fatigue, sickness, etc. The ability of these sensors to detect a driver in a state of duress could lead to the development of life-saving intervention systems.”
“Of the 50 or so volcanic eruptions per year around the world, two-thirds to three-fourths of these occur within range of a population center. We hope that our collaborative efforts and continuing work on mapping and predicting volcanic flows will help to prevent future losses of life in these areas.”
